Local Clubs
If you are interested in astronomy and do not already belong to an astronomical club, you should consider joining one. Club meetings are a great place to socialize with other amateur astronomers. Most clubs, as part of their meetings, will present astronomical lectures, conducted by both amateur and professional astronomers. Clubs usually have astronomical libraries and loaner equipment available to members. Amateur astronomical magazines generally give subscription discounts to club members.
Clubs routinely hold “Star Parties” where members meet to observe as a group. Star Parties are often held at a dark-sky observing site. Members will happily demonstrate their equipment while giving you a tour of the night sky. Star parties are a great place to use a variety of astronomical equipment before purchasing your own.

The closest astronomical clubs to Bloomington Indiana are the Indiana Astronomical Society, located in Martinsville Indiana and the Stonebelt Stargazers, located in Bedford, Indiana. Besides local clubs, the Astronomical League, the largest organization of amateur astronomers, provides many different self directed observing programs leading to certificates and pins to recognize the observers’ accomplishments and for demonstrating their observing skills with a variety of instruments and objects.
